In the heart of Ivory Coast, renowned for its legendary hospitality, this year’s Annual Logistics Country Managers Meeting was not just an event but a cornerstone in our journey towards shaping the future of logistics. Hosted under the adept guidance of our Group COO, Mr. Samad Osman, and the invaluable support of the Ivory Coast team led by Mr. B Aitchedji, the meeting was a fusion of strategic discussions, goal setting, and the strengthening of camaraderie among leaders in our field.

We were honoured to have the presence and contributions of our Group CEO, Mr. Gerrit Van Der Merwe, whose insights and leadership continue to inspire us all. The event’s success was a testament to the collaborative spirit that defines our group, showcasing the collective effort of every participant.

This year’s meeting focused on crafting our future by discussing strategies, setting goals, and engaging in meaningful dialogue about the path forward. Through a series of thematic sessions, workshops, open discussions, and even fun games, this created an ambiance filled with memorable moments, laughter, and, admittedly, a bit of pain as some challenges proved tough. Yet, it was the prevailing team spirit and a competitive yet fun mindset that carried us through to the end.

The different themes explored during the meeting, coupled with interactive workshops and open discussions, allowed us to dive deep into the complexities and opportunities within our industry. The inclusion of fun games helped break the ice, foster teamwork, and create an atmosphere where ideas could flow freely, ensuring that every moment was not only educational but also enjoyable.

As we reflect on the success of this gathering, we were reminded of the power of unity and shared vision. The discussions we had and the goals we have set pave the way for a future where we not only meet the challenges of the logistics industry but also redefine its standards.

This meeting was a reminder of what we can achieve together, and it’s with great anticipation that we look forward to the road ahead.

Translation: In the context of the sustainable fight against COVID-19 and the preservation of port users and workers’ health, Cotonou Port Authority informs that the appearance of the virus is a reality. Indeed, COVID-19 is a virus affecting humans as well as animals and causing acute respiratory infections to humans ranging from mild colds to severe pneumonias which can cause death. It can be transmitted from animal to human or from human to human by air, by inhalation of the volatile virus or in contact with secretions of contaminated objects. Cotonou port being a maritime border which is regularly used by several users and foreigners, the Cotonou Port Authority invites all it staff and users to implement the following preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection in the port.

Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or with hydro alcoholic gel;

Avoid direct physical contact with sick people;

Wear a mask or gloves if you go to densely populated areas (boarding formalities);

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or the crook of your elbow before coughing or sneezing;

Do not come into contact with objectively sick animals.

Do not consume undercooked meat, unpasteurised dairy products, raw foods (salads, fruits, raw vegetables) if you cannot be sure that they have been previously washed with decontaminated water;

Avoid close unprotected contact with people having fever and cough and consult a doctor in case of fever, cough and breathing difficulties.

All port operators (stevedores, shipping agents, forwarding agents, transporters) are invited to implement the above measures in order to preserve the health of their staff and port users to avoid the horrors of this virus.

Saturday 8th December was Partners Day

OMA Ghana and OMA Togo staff made a huge difference on Saturday 8th December. As part of CSR project Futurestars, a kit amnesty in the UK culminated in a full 40ft container (kindly donated by partners Fendercare), containing hundreds of boots, kit and equipment.

So many companies in the UK were involved in donating kit, time and services to allow the container to be stored, filled and shipped.

Once it was delivered on site to Tema Stadium a fantastically attended Partners Day allowed all the kit and equipment to be sorted and distributed. Teams from OMA Ghana in Tema and Accra, and OMA Togo in Lomé worked tirelessly alongside other Futurestars partners Yinson, Fendercare and Hapag-Lloyd and Prime Insurance

We were also delighted to welcome teachers from the Futurestars schools in Tema, staff from the Ghana Education Service` boys & girls from the Futurestars development academy, a team from the British High Commission and fantastic local charity Accra-based Akwaaba Volunteers

The container now has a roof and fitted with shelving and will be a much needed store room for Futurestars coaches at its permanent home at the Tema stadium. A big thank you to everyone who attended and to Simon Milton, Futurestars director, Titus Bramble, Futurestars Ambassador & Lead Coach and Emmanuel Okyne-Tetteh, Futurestars project manager in Ghana for making it happen. Next stop Togo!

Last month OMA Ghana, Togo and Benin all successfully passed their annual audits for ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015.

OMA Ghana also passed their audit for OHSAS 18001.

The environment in which OMA operates along the West African coast presents certain challenges and in order to maintain the highest possible level of service expected by our international clients, we are committed to implementing quality management system and environmental management system, audited and certified by DNV GL.

We believe that OMA sets the benchmark for quality management and in fact OMA Benin was the first ship agency in Cotonou to achieve ISO certification back in 2011. We are whole-heartedly committed to the process and are enormously proud of the efforts our staff put in every day to achieve and keep the ISO certifications.

We have implemented a Quality Management System ISO 9001:2015 in Togo, Ghana and Benin to:

Ensure our services are provided in the most effective way.

Show tangible proof that we deliver reliable and high quality, traceable services.

Demonstrate our commitment to meet statutory and regulatory requirements.

Maximise customer satisfaction and employee engagement.

Keep records of everything we do to serve as future reference.

Regular external audits maintain the focus and keep the performance level high.

The management system has allowed us to improve reporting and communications, maintain reliable scheduling and delivery, enhance the quality of our service and minimize errors.

OMA Ghana, Togo and Benin are also ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System) certified to

Demonstrate that we care about the environment around us

Assure that we are committed to identify and control environmental impacts through a demonstrable environmental management system.

Have a framework for identifying and complying with the various legal, regulatory, and contractual requirements, that apply to our processes.

Our newer affiliates, OMA Côte d’Ivoire and OMA Senegal have begun the process of ISO certification.

September 16th saw the 4th Annual Futurestars Festival of Sport take place in Tema Sports Stadium, Ghana.

This year we were delighted to welcome former England Captain Terry Butcher along with ex-Newcastle & Ipswich defender and Futurestars Ambassador, Titus Bramble. Both players visited the five Futurestars partner schools and the football academies and took part in sports training sessions as well as the festival. Titus Bramble is staying on to work with the coaches and the children over the next few weeks in both Ghana and Togo.

See the Joy News round up and interview with Terry Butcher here.

A fantastic turnout at this year’s tournament saw the five partner primary schools (Baatsona, Community 7/1, Community 8/1, Rupublic Road and Twedaase schools) compete in football and netball tournaments and sprint races. The Academy teams – Futurestars Agoe, Togo and Futurestars, Ghana also played a close and exciting game that ended dramatically with penalties, the Ghana home team taking the Trophy from last year’s winners Togo.

Community 8 school were the worthy winners of the School’s football tournament. In the new events this year, the netball tournament saw Twedaase school take the trophy after closely fought matches, Enock Agude (Twedaase school) and Constance Tetteh (Community 8 school), were awarded the trophy for Fastest Boy and Fastest Girl. The Goal King award was presented to Isreal Aseidu from Community 8 school and the prize for the best behaved school went to Community 7 school. The hotly contested adult tournament was won by the Ghana Education Services team (GES Meo Stars). Congratulations to everyone who took part.
Boogie Band played an amazing set all day and children and adults alike enjoyed an excellent lunch and all day refreshments provided by Mayflower Catering Services.
The event was well covered by the local media – CitiFM, CifiFMonline, Graphic.com and Joy News.

Futurestars is an education through sport initiative started in 2015 by OMA Ghana, Ipswich Town Football Club and Yinson Production working with five primary schools in Tema. Ipswich Town trained coaches are employed full time by OMA to work with the children offering PE, netball, football and sports coaching as well as small development academies in football and netball for children showing particular promise. Yinson have spear-headed a refurbishment programme at the participating schools. For more information please see the OMA in the Community section of the website.
